Ruttya fruticosa, popularly called Rabbit Ears because of its unique flower shape, is an evergreen flowering shrub from the Acanthaceae family. Native to East Africa, it is admired for its unusual and brightly colored blooms that resemble a rabbit’s ears or an open mouth.
The flowers are typically deep orange to reddish-brown with a dark maroon throat, giving them a striking, two-toned “jammy mouth” appearance. Blooming generously in warm climates, the plant attracts sunbirds, bees, and butterflies, making it excellent for pollinator-friendly gardens.
The shrub grows up to 1.5–2 meters tall, with glossy green leaves providing a lush backdrop to its flamboyant flowers. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Once established, Ruttya fruticosa is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, making it ideal for tropical and subtropical gardens.
