African Tall maize (Zea mays) is a high-yielding, single-cut fodder variety widely grown For Forage . It produces tall plants with abundant green biomass suitable for cows, buffaloes, goats and other livestock.
The crop may be fed fresh after chopping or used to prepare silage. When included as part of a balanced livestock diet, nutritious green maize fodder can support animal health and milk production.
International Orders
Phytosanitary certification and trackable worldwide shipping are included in the price.
-
Seed requirement: approximately 15–20 kg per acre
-
Expected green-fodder yield: approximately 12–16 tonnes per acre under suitable growing conditions
-
Crop type: Annual, single-cut fodder maize
-
Recommended harvest stage: Milk stage of the cob
Actual yield varies according to climate, soil fertility, irrigation and crop management.
Soil and Land Preparation
African Tall maize grows best in fertile, deep and well-drained loamy or sandy-loam soil with good moisture-holding capacity. Avoid waterlogged fields.
Plough the field thoroughly and break up large soil clods to prepare a fine, level seedbed. Mix approximately 10 tonnes of well-decomposed farmyard manure or compost per acre into the soil during final land preparation. A soil test is recommended before applying fertilizers.
Sowing
African Tall maize can be cultivated during the Kharif, Rabi and summer seasons where irrigation is available.
Sow the seeds approximately 2–3 cm deep. For green-fodder production, maintain approximately:
-
Row-to-row spacing: 30 cm
-
Plant-to-plant spacing: 15 cm
Sowing time should be adjusted according to the local climate and availability of irrigation.
Fertilizer and Irrigation
Apply fertilizers according to a soil-test report and local agricultural recommendations. Where no soil test is available, a general recommendation per hectare is:
-
Basal application: 30 kg nitrogen, 40 kg phosphorus and 20 kg potassium
-
Top dressing: An additional 30 kg nitrogen approximately 30 days after sowing
Irrigate immediately after sowing and provide a light life irrigation on the third day when required. Subsequent irrigation may generally be given every 8–12 days, depending on the season, soil and weather.
Young maize plants are sensitive to waterlogging. Do not allow standing water in the field, particularly during the first 20 days.
Weed Management
Carry out the first weeding approximately 20–25 days after sowing. Additional weeding may be performed whenever necessary to keep the field clean during early crop growth.
Harvesting and Use
For nutritious green fodder and silage, harvest African Tall maize when the cobs reach the milk stage. At this stage, the crop offers a suitable balance of yield, palatability and nutritional value.
Chop the harvested plants into manageable pieces before feeding them to animals. Introduce any new fodder gradually and use it as part of a properly balanced ration.
African Tall maize is normally grown as a single-cut fodder crop. For grain or seed production, allow the cobs to mature and dry fully before harvesting.
Seed Requirement
Approximately 15–20 kg of African Tall maize seed is required to sow one acre.
