Berseem Clover Seeds

Berseem Clover Seeds (Trifolium alexandrinum)

Nutritious Multi-Cut Fodder for Livestock

It is  a popular cool-season fodder crop. It is widely called the “King of Fodder Crops” because it produces soft, leafy and nutritious green forage that livestock enjoy eating.

Berseem is an annual legume—not a grass. It is suitable for dairy farms and livestock producers looking for a reliable supply of green fodder during the cooler growing season.

Key Features

  • Nutritious and palatable green fodder

  • Annual, cool-season forage legume

  • Provides several cuts from one sowing

  • Suitable for cattle, buffaloes, goats and sheep

  • Can be used for green feeding, grazing and hay

  • Produces soft stems and leafy forage

  • Helps add nitrogen to the soil

  • Suitable for crop rotation and mixed-farming systems

Harvesting

The first harvest is normally ready approximately 50–60 days after sowing. Later cuts may be taken every 25–35 days, depending on the variety, temperature, irrigation and crop growth.

Under suitable conditions and good management, Berseem can provide approximately 4–8 fodder cuts in one growing season.

Growing Conditions

  • Climate: Cool and mild growing conditions

  • Sowing season: Usually autumn or early winter, depending on the country

  • Soil: Fertile, well-prepared loam or clay-loam soil

  • Water: Regular irrigation is recommended

  • Sunlight: Grow in full sunlight

  • Sowing depth: Sow shallowly and cover the seeds lightly

Berseem grows best in fertile soil with adequate moisture. Avoid highly acidic soil and prolonged waterlogging. Sowing dates and crop performance vary according to local climate.
