Gymnema sylvestre is a tropical climbing plant known as Gurmar or Madhunashini, meaning “sugar destroyer.”  The plant has small green leaves that can suppress the taste of sweetness when chewed.

It grows well in warm, tropical climates and can be planted in pots or gardens. Local names include Gurmar (Hindi), Sirukurinjan (Tamil), Chakkarakolli (Malayalam), and Podapatri (Telugu).
