Fodder Sorghum CO 31 Seeds – Sorghum bicolor
Type: High-Yielding Multicut Fodder Variety
 Includes:  Phytosanitary Certificate

Fodder Sorghum CO 31, also known as COFS 31, is a high-yielding multicut forage variety developed for regular green-fodder production. It produces tall plants with broad, succulent leaves, multiple tillers and good regrowth after cutting. The nutritious and palatable fodder is suitable for cattle, dairy cows, buffaloes, goats and sheep.

Fodder Uses

  • Produces nutritious green fodder for livestock.

  • Suitable for cattle, buffaloes, goats and sheep.

  • Can be supplied fresh, chopped or processed as silage.

  • Broad leaves and succulent stems improve palatability.

  • Multicut growth provides repeated harvests from one planting.

  • Suitable for dairy farms, livestock farms and commercial fodder production.

  • Can be intercropped with fodder cowpea to produce a more balanced forage mixture.

Planting Instructions

  • Growing season: Under irrigated conditions, sow during the recommended warm-season planting period. For rain-fed cultivation, sow at the beginning of the monsoon.

  • Soil: Best suited to fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid fields subject to prolonged waterlogging.

  • Seed rate: Approximately 5 kg per hectare.

  • Land preparation: Plough the field two or three times to create a fine, weed-free seedbed.

  • Row spacing: Approximately 30 cm between rows and 15 cm between plants.

  • Sowing depth: Sow shallowly in moist soil and cover the seeds lightly.

  • Irrigation: Irrigate after sowing and thereafter approximately every 7–10 days, depending on the soil, rainfall and weather.

  • Weed management: Carry out the first weeding approximately 25–30 days after sowing. Additional weeding may be performed when required.

  • Fertilization: Apply farmyard manure and a balanced fertilizer according to local soil-test recommendations. Additional nitrogen after each harvest can encourage vigorous regrowth.

Maturity and Harvest

  • Crop type: Multicut fodder sorghum with productive growth for up to approximately three years under suitable management.

  • First harvest: Approximately 75–80 days after sowing.

  • Subsequent harvests: Approximately every 50 days, depending on crop growth and local conditions.

  • Harvest frequency: Up to 6–7 cuts per year under favourable cultivation.

  • Harvesting method: Cut above ground level while leaving sufficient stubble to encourage healthy regrowth.

  • Potential green-fodder yield: Approximately 190 tonnes per hectare annually under recommended management and favourable conditions.

Important Livestock-Feeding Precaution

Young, drought-stressed, frost-damaged or newly regrowing sorghum may accumulate unsafe levels of prussic acid or nitrates. Do not feed very young or stressed plants directly to livestock. Allow the crop to reach a safe harvesting stage, avoid feeding immediately after frost or severe drought, and seek advice from a local agricultural or veterinary specialist when conditions are uncertain. Forage testing is recommended if toxicity is suspected.

Phytosanitary Certificate

The seeds are supplied with a phytosanitary certificate for international shipping

Germination, growth, harvest timing and yield may vary depending on climate, soil fertility, irrigation, seed storage and cultivation practices.
