Nephelium ramboutan-ake, commonly known as Pulasan, is a rare tropical fruit tree from the Sapindaceae family, closely related to the rambutan and lychee. The tree grows up to 10–15 meters tall with a dense crown and glossy green compound leaves.
The fruits are round to oval, about 5–7 cm in diameter, with a thick, leathery rind that is deep red to purple and covered with short, blunt spines (unlike the hairy rambutan). Inside, the white aril is juicy, firm, and exceptionally sweet, often considered sweeter than rambutan.
Pulasan is mainly cultivated in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, and is prized as a rare exotic fruit. The fruit is eaten fresh, used in juices, jams, and desserts, while the roasted seeds have a flavor similar to cacao.
It thrives in warm, humid tropical climates, requires fertile, well-drained soil, and grows best in full sun with regular watering.
