Tagasaste (Chamaecytisus proliferus), commonly known as Tree Lucerne, is a fast-growing perennial fodder shrub originating from the Canary Islands. It produces nutritious green foliage that can be used as supplementary forage for cattle, sheep and goats.

Once established, Tagasaste develops a deep root system and shows good tolerance to dry conditions. It can be regularly pruned or cut to encourage fresh leafy growth. The plant is also useful for windbreaks, erosion control, soil improvement and agroforestry plantations.

Sowing Instructions

Tagasaste seeds have a hard outer coat. Carefully scarify the seed coat or soak the seeds in hot water before sowing. Plant approximately 1–2 cm deep in moist, well-drained soil. Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged until germination.

Young plants should be protected from heavy grazing until they are properly established. Introduce Tagasaste foliage gradually as part of a balanced livestock diet rather than using it as the sole feed.
