Harvesting and Cutting
First harvest:
The first cut is generally ready approximately 70–75 days after sowing. Harvest when about 10% of the plants begin flowering or when the crop reaches the recommended maturity for your local conditions.
Second cut:
The second harvest can normally be taken approximately 30–40 days after the first cut, depending on temperature, irrigation, soil fertility and plant growth.
Subsequent cuts:
Later cuts may be taken every 25–40 days during active growth. Under favourable conditions, farmers may obtain approximately 4–8 cuts per year, depending on the climate, variety and crop-management system.
Leave around 5–7 cm of stubble above ground level while harvesting to support healthy and rapid regrowth.
Expected Fodder Yield
Under suitable conditions and proper management, Alfalfa may produce approximately 35–50 metric tonnes of green fodder per hectare per year. Actual yield varies according to variety, climate, irrigation, soil fertility, cutting stage and crop care.
