Grow the hardy and highly valued Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) from seeds. Also known as Seaberry, this deciduous fruiting shrub produces attractive silver-green foliage and bright orange berries rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and natural oils.

Sea Buckthorn is extremely cold-hardy and well suited to temperate and mountainous climates. Its extensive root system helps control soil erosion and improves poor soil by fixing nitrogen. Plants are dioecious, meaning separate male and female plants are generally required for fruit production, so growing several seeds is recommended.

Germination Instructions

For better germination, soak the seeds in water for 12–24 hours. Mix them with slightly moist sand or peat and cold-stratify in the refrigerator for approximately 30–90 days. Sow about 5 mm deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the soil lightly moist and place in a bright location at approximately 18–24°C. Germination can be gradual and may take several weeks.

Please Note: Sea Buckthorn seeds may produce both male and female plants. Fruit production normally requires at least one male plant to pollinate several female plants. Germination time and success may vary according to growing conditions.
